GREAT BOOKS TO READ TO YOUR SIX-TO-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD PART IV

Here at Home Away From Home, we encourage kids to pursue literature to expand their minds. That’s why we promote reading here at our child care center. For the last few blogs, we’ve been talking about great books that your six-to-eight-year-old can enjoy. Today, we’re continuing that theme with four additional titles. Here are a few titles that you can grab at the library to read with your youngster!

THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS BY DAV PILKEY

The Adventures of Captain Underpants is a tail of mischief and fun. We follow along as our main characters, George Beard and Harold Hutchins, pull harmless pranks around the school. Unfortunately, their principal, Mr. Krupp doesn’t take well to the boys’ antics, and he strives to punish them for their wrongdoings. But when the boys use a magical ring to control Mr. Krupp, the antics only continue. There’s crime fighting, a sing-along, and an evil doctor. It’s a story that’s sure to delight your kid, and the pictures will make your little one laugh out loud. This book is the first in a series of books with similar plots.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID BY JEFF KINNEY

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a 221-page book that is a quick read due to its comic book style. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid we learn about the life and perils of Greg Heffley, a kid navigating his day to day home life and school life. The only thing Greg desires is popularity, however, his mishaps, as well as some bullying, ensure that Greg is anything but popular. In the end, we learn that there are more important things than popularity, including friendship. Teach your child how to deal with bullying, how to grow self-confidence, and what’s truly valuable in life with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

THE STORY OF BABAR, THE TRAVELS OF BABAR, & BABAR THE KING BY JEAN DE BRUNHOFF

These three titles, The Story of Babar, The Travels of Babar, and Babar the King, make up a series of stories by French author Jean De Brunhoff. In our stories, we follow Babar as he grows from an orphaned elephant into the king of elephants. Babar produces a family, and strives to help his fellow elephants as he rules the Elephant realm. These stories are full of strife, but ultimately, they result in triumph. This is a great read to show kids how to overcome obstacles, and it’s the perfect book series if your kid loves elephants.

FLAT STANLEY BY JEFF BROWN

Flat Stanley is a sheer joy to read, and it’s the perfect book to inspire creativity in your child. Read along as Stanley, our main character, adapts to life as a paper-thin boy (He gets squashed by a bulletin board, and becomes forever flat!). Stanley turns his new body shape into a bit of a superpower, since it enables him to slip under doors, mail himself in an envelope, and fly like a kite. Flat Stanley is loads of fun, and it provides a variety of opportunities to craft your own Flat Stanley! There are also several other books in the series, including Stanley and the Magic Lamp (a book where Stanley finds a genie in a lamp), Invisible Stanley (where Stanley is mysteriously transformed to be invisible), and Stanley, Flat Again! (which contains further adventures with Stanley in his famous flat form). Your child will delight at the imaginative scenes, and they’ll certainly ask to read a Stanley book often.

Flat Stanley has further inspired children around the globe to become penpals in an ongoing project aptly entitled, “The Flat Stanley Project.” You can learn more about, and participate in The Flat Stanley Project by visiting the website.
